From: AustraliaMr. Mike: Yes there are multi-region players available. In fact the Federal Government made it legal for you to hack into your player to make it multi-region and not make the warranty void. If you buy a new DVD player and it isn't multi-region then the salesperson will make it so. Our system is PAL - so we have no issues with DVDs from Europe as they use the same system.
The main reason most Australians wait and not order DVDs from the USA is the currency value. Recently we have been doing very well against the US Dollar - even reaching parity (i.e. 1AUD was equal to or more than 1USD). We're still around the 97c US mark so now is the time most Aussies are getting DVDs from the USA.
Most older TV shows get a test run - usually the first season and if sales are good then they will bring out the next season. However if sales are bad then they won't bring out the other seasons and we do have to go overseas to get them. I know of a couple of TV shows that have had that happened.Added: Tuesday 30 November 2010 21:47:26 PST

From: VancouverI seriously don't understand why anyone would wait to order DVDs in a country like Australia which is so far behind in terms of Five-O release dates compared to the USA, except out of some peculiar patriotic loyalty. I remember more than 15 years ago, I used to send tapes of The X-Files to a couple of fans in Australia, since that program was also shown there months behind North America as well. All of these people owned VHS players which could play North American as well as Australian tapes. Are multi-standard and region DVD players also common in Australia?

From: AustraliaHeather-Rose: That newspaper is based in Sydney so it's not really speaking for the whole country. The networks here base their decisions on ratings for the whole country and not just Sydney.
Also the Herald Sun is own by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. Rupert's son Lachlan runs the company here and he has just bought a lot of shares in Network Ten which happens to own the rights to the new version of Hawaii Five-O. Upon closer look 5 out of the 10 shows listed are in some way linked to News Corp (they own Foxtel/Fox Sports as well). So to me this article is not very impartial.Added: Tuesday 30 November 2010 18:54:19 PST

I worked for British TV for 12 years .International networks hold back on new shows to see how many episodes are ordered in the States before airing them. That is why in the past few years more underperforming US shows get a full order season, 22 episodes, instead of being canceled after 9 episodes, even if everyone knows they will be canceled in May, (The Defenders , Shit my dad, Chase...).International networks got tired of paying for shows to later see them canceled after 9 episodes.
Hawaii 50 is not a flop, but it is not a hit either. It is a mediocre show in the 1st American network, and that is a problem.CBS invested a lot of money in this remake and it is not paying off. The show has an easy spot with weak competition and even there is underperforming. So that is bad news.
If things don't improve, it won't get a second season. And if it does, you can expect Hawaii 50 to be moved to a Friday or Sunday spot, where low ratings shows are sent to die.Added: Tuesday 30 November 2010 13:10:48 PST

From: North Conway, NHI'm sad about Leslie Nielsen. He was one of my favorites since long before "Airplane!". Those of you who aren't as old as I am
may not understand how big a surprise it was to see him and other serious stalwarts such as Lloyd Bridges, Robert Stack and Peter Graves in that crazy movie! They so rarely did anything comedic that it made for a great effect. The main gimmick of the movie (the parody of the B-grade disaster movie) ran out about halfway through, but then the old TV actors took over and carried it the rest of the way with their sturdy professionalism. I would have loved to see the outtakes from that. Too bad James MacArthur wasn't in it too. That would have been perfect!
But yes, Nielsen was always reliable, and had a most impressive voice and demeanor. I wish I'd seen him play Clarence Darrow in the touring production he was doing a few years ago.
***
Was it JulieS who was saying that Australian TV was holding back on the new show to see if it was a flop or not? Well, they seem to have decided that it's not - in fact, it's at the top of this publication's "must-see TV" list:
bit.ly/ijIRSD
>>
With a multitude of channels and networks committing more funding to local productions, the viewer can expect more top TV choices next year than ever before. So set the recorder, or wrestle for the remote now, these are the must-see TV shows in 2011:
HAWAII FIVE-0 (Ten) Putting the `whoa baby' in Hawaii Five-O, Aussie heartthrob Alex O'Loughlin muscles up - and how - for this adrenalin rush of a TV remake. His Steve McGarrett smoulders to Scott Caan's comic Danno and between them breathe new life into a series just built for today's cop show-obsessed audiences. Add hot chicks in bikinis and a no-cheese nod to the iconic 1970s favourite, this is great fun and oh-so easy on the eye. To air early February.

From: Watertown, MAI was so sorry to learn of the passing of Leslie Nielson. He was a great actor (both dramatic and comedic) and he will be sadly missed. I remember him as the CIA Director Bret in the HFO pilot, Cocoon and as Colonial Farraday in We Hang Our Own. He has always been one of my favorites. Last night, as a tribute to him, I watched We Hang Our Own again and even though the plot takes a really unrealistic twist to solve the crime (e.g. finding blood and fingerprints on a rock used as a murder weapon days after it happened on the Big Island where it rains every single day without fail!) I enjoyed watching the sparring match between the Colonial and McGarrett. Very good give and take on both sides! And the music score was very good, too, HFO with a western drawl! Plus, I always enjoy watching Jack ride across the "prairie".
Mr. Mike, do you have any information on the portrait of Colonial Farraday's great grandfather shown in that episode(who BTW looked just like him only with a beard and shock of hair)...who painted it and if it was ever sold as HFO memorabilia at any time? Maybe the painter who did the portrait of Mrs. Mondrago in Highest Castle painted this one, too? Similar style, I think.
Oh, well. Surely, Leslie Nielson will go down in history as one of the best actors of my generation. I sincerely mean that. And don't call me Shirley!Added: Tuesday 30 November 2010 07:56:43 PST

From: Tangerine@KDM, I agree with you about CSI:Miami compared to H50. The only difference I can think of between CSI:Miami and H50 is H50 is shot on location in Hawaii. CSI:Miami isn't shot here in FL. They filmed some stock shots here and went back to LA. (At least Miami Vice was shot here on location.)
I was going to give H50 a try for the whole season and have decided I have better things to do. It just doesn't have the spark of classic Five-O and the stand-alone format does not fit the time restrictions shows have today. The commercials are now the important point and the network has to have blaring banners to remind the viewer what you are watchingCouple this with the idiotic writing and lousy music I've signed off on nu50. I'm a classic girl. IMO the most boring classic Five-O is levels above the best nu50.

From: PittsburghI have to say that my memories of the original are not "distant" due to the regular release of the DVDs. Not only am I rediscovering favorites, but I am discovering new ones. Because the original series was first broadcast before recording devices, and some stations only rebroadcast a set number of episodes, there are many episodes I have never seen until the DVD releases. Jack Lord's interpretation of Steve McGarrett is very fresh in my mind!

The only reason 50 was slightly up last week was because the show faced no competition. ABC didn't air Castle. So some viewers had nothing else to watch than 50.
No negativity here. Just the truth. Most posts are honest. You just like it or not.
50 is not the mega hit CBS wanted. Because it is predictable and boring. Nothing to do with the quality of the Original. Bikinis and shirtless scenes. That's all.

Some of you just need to get a life and realize that things change. You have to understand that no-one would ever have taken over the role of McGarrett and satisfied your distant memories of Jack's take on the character. Fine...because CBS, thankfully, doesn't care what you think, nor did Paramount when they recast Capt Kirk.

From: BeverlyHello, I am a big TV watcher. I love TV and movies.
I love action movies. I love cop shows. I have no problem with violence. And I never had a problem with H50 being remade.
But this remake has been a big 0 for me. I find this show very boring.
I think their problems started with the cast. The lead man is too young and he lacks a strong screen presence. And the rest of the cast is mediocre too. Add to that no Hawaiians in the team and the soporific plot they give us each week and all you get is a mediocre show.
The only good thing is Scott C. But not even him is able to keep me awake for the whole episode. I bet the guy is going to be a great movie star someday.Added: Monday 29 November 2010 12:44:20 PST

From: New York, NYHans,
I don't care for the torture scenes either and agree completely with you on that. That episode where they tied Bronson Pinchot to the hood of the car while they sped around was pure idiocy, but without getting too much into it, just because torture scenes that are ludicrously put into a show like the new Five-O doesn't mean that the producers are not left leaning. Those horrid "Saw" movies that have been polluting the box office with torture, dismemberment, gore, extreme violence and other atrocities probably have many people behind them that probably lean left, but I do not know that for sure. My overall point to Steve was I do feel that the current problems that the United States, Canada, the UK, Europe and the West are having with muslim terrorists, and terrorists of other races and religions that their cause is recruiting are making creative artists very nervous about how they protray things in their works. I'm Catholic and an Italian American, and you know how many things I've seen in the movies, television, and the arts that portray my religion and descent negatively, but I don't get upset about it and want to close down someone's freedom of speech or get violent. If you portray Islam or Muslim terrorists a certain way it creates all sorts of problems now, so producers play it "safe" as I said to Steve from Miami. As for how the old "Five-O" portrayed black people well two wrongs don't make a right, and I don't excuse that behavior either. My overall point being without getting into politics because as I said, I don't want to venture into that, I would like to see gritty realism in the show without the dumb torture scenes and without the politically correct "villians".Added: Monday 29 November 2010 08:33:49 PST

From: BostonHey Rainbow Warrior, (great handle by the way) I concede that I do have a bad habit for focusing on inconsistencies and admit I’m not always right… but in this case, I think I got a point. During the pilot show when Steve dangled the dude over the edge of the building I thought it might have been a “teaching moment” but turns out it was not the case. Every episode I’ve seen (I missed a few in the middle) has had a torture / police brutality scene in it. And it appears they are glorifying these acts with a frat boy like glee, which contradicts the Hollywood bias theory you alluded too.
We can stay on topic and discuss without getting political. All that aside, I think it’s an unsettling part of the new show, up there with the bickering banter… some posters have mentioned the plots and acting are terrible, I disagree and think they both show strength and potential at times while it’s the writing that is dragging the new show into the mud… no matter how well a show starts off I’m just waiting for that coach-in-front-of-the-door moment and bracing for the weekly torture porn…Added: Monday 29 November 2010 07:54:00 PST

From: VancouverFrom a laudatory review of the Windows 7 mobile phone operating system (http://bit.ly/enKU9F):
In sum, I have only one complaint about Phone 7: Stop talking about it on "Hawaii Five-O!" Cripes, it's one thing to get a product placement on a TV show, but Phone 7 has become a recurring character! Danno's a technology Luddite who can't compose an e-mail. In one scene, Chin Ho tells him "Y'know, if you start typing a word it completes the word for you," while Steve McGarrett tutors him that, "If you turn it sideways, it's easier to type."
If Phone 7 solves the crime in the next episode, I’m going to stop watching the show!Added: Sunday 28 November 2010 21:13:37 PST

H5.1 holds the 'worst written' slot again this week, which is amazing when it's up against crap like 'No Ordinary Family'
A bunch of thieves are using blood doping to give themselves Spider-Man level powers.
Even though they are renting a huge luxury home, they break into a chiropractor's office to do the blood doping. Why? It's a bag of needles and IV equipment and a mini-fridge. Even if you want the equipment, why not just take it back to the house?
One of them escapes McGarrett by getting in an elevator, popping through the huge in plain sight hatch in the roof that no real elevator has, and, according to McGarrett, climbing the cables faster than the elevator can rise. Uh - say WHAT? The cable is connected to the elevator, you morons; it's not a race. And it's the slipperiest thing imaginable; nobody's climbing it at all.
McGarrett busts what he thinks are the crooks at the start of the triathalon, but it turns out it's somebody else using their electronic tracking numbers (and it doesn't even occur to them that these guys might be in on it) and McGarrett says "If these guys have their numbers, that means the robbery is happening RIGHT THIS MINUTE!!!" - again, say what? They've had the numbers since before the race began. The robbery might have happened hours ago, or not for hours yet.
And the big luxury house just *happens* to be next to Dano's ex-wife. How handy.
And the whole bit with all the people dressed as house painters; what was the point?
And why dump the money, showing that stealing the money wasn't the point? At least get rid of the money somewhere else.

This is totally opposed to Asner's own political leanings which are left-wing. I think some actors enjoy the challenge of taking on a role like this. I recently saw this 1962 William Shatner movie called The Intruder where he plays this bigot who goes around cities in the southern US fomenting racial hatred. From: CAThe Original was the best of the best when it aired. And that explains why people is still watching it and why CBS tried to make money from the name 50
I cannot see this happening with the new show. It is just a generic cop show in Hawaii. With boring plots and poor acting.
I love NCSI , all CSI, all Law&Order. Loved Lost. ...They have good stories. 50 uses too much gunfire, annoying noise, banter and shirtless scenes instead of a smart plot. The story is so predictable.
In the last EW magazine cover they have the biggest new hit show this season. And it is not 50, but The Walking Dead.
Trying to duplicate a classic as 50 is losing time and money. It wasn't perfect, but it was the best back then. The remake is just another mediocre show in a long list of mediocre shows.

From: Original Recipe: Acceptin No ImitationsHey Stevie D, one would think that if you was a fan of this “new show” you would want that show to rise to the heights of its namesake, the original Hawaii Five-O. But it seems you wanna justify the shortcomings of this “new show” but sayin that ahhh, the original Five-O had a few clunker episodes, and in retrospect the actin ain’t as good as I remember, and you know, that Season 12 sure was a stinker.
C’mon, now, let’s not lower the bar because the rebooters ain’t up to the task at hand. The lesson here is that they can call their show Five-O, But That Don’t Make It So...
So, go ahead, man, you can have your laugh at the original show. But Chicken and others be havin a heartier laugh at these new cats Pretendin to be Hawaii Five-O.Added: Friday 26 November 2010 09:37:00 PST

From: Fairfax VAAs much as I love the old show - having deeply analyzed almost every episode - the new show is actually good too. Although the new show could use some improvement - a tougher McGarrett, meaner villains, a classic episode or two, it's not bad. Certainly better than a good number of the old show's clunkers, and certainly better than anything from old show season 12. I'm amazed at the number of people and extras used in the new show - it's virtually wall to wall people in parties, beach scenes, races. Always something to see and never a dull moment. And for those ripping apart the new show, I think it's safe to say that many can laugh at the old show with it's bad acting from some, usual one-liners from the Five-O staff, only McGarrett can solve it approach, and it's share of boring episodes.

From: VancouverAn interesting post from the H50FC Yahoo group by "midnight_raider2001":
After reading a link where the new stars of Hawaii Five-O complain about their workload, this is a good way to post on something that's concerned me for a while.
From September 20 until November 22nd, the new Hawaii Five-O has aired 10 new episodes in succession. That looks better than it is in reality. It looks like the actors are having to double- and triple-time it to finish the new episodes ... most one-hour shows take 8 days to film, and even if they are filming on Saturdays they are losing half a week on each new episode. The two-month leeway they had when filming started is drying up.
If CBS sticks to its pattern and runs episodes 11, 12 and 13 before the new year, it's going to bite them HARD in 2011. January and February are the highest-viewing months in television, and the viewers (and CBS stations) will demand new episodes throughout those months. Say CBS does new shows from January 10 to February 28, eight weeks. That makes 21 shows, and then they will have one (or possibly three) shows to air clear up to the end of the season on May 23.
That's what I mean by Moonlighting syndrome. You know that show, which along with cast feuds and insane working hours also took so long to film that from December of each year onward you were lucky to get one new episode PER MONTH. Audiences put up with it for a while and then started deserting the show. If Five-O keeps burning up its library of unaired shows now, the network will have to vamp during Janaury and February and get one new show at a time every two weeks, maybe more. That's the last thing you want going into the home stretch, especially with exhausted and burned-out actors. And it is really noteworthy that Alex O'Loughlin and Scott Caan are just killing time with this show until they get a feature film. Scott Caan should have really had a long chat with his dad, who did Las Vegas for four years (although he didn't have to be in as many scenes as Scott does) under many of the same working conditions. Among othet things, James Caan could have pointed out that only a very few people go from TV to starring in features, and most of those who do get B-minus scripts which the studios would bury if some actor/actress didn't think he/she was a big shot and would become an instant superstar with this one feature. TV is less rewarding in the short run, but a lot of TV is MUCH better than most feature filmsAdded: Thursday 25 November 2010 17:10:44 PST

From: VancouverComment from TV Guide about Taryn Manning, who plays McGarrett's sister (though not very much):
Watch out Hawaii Five-0. Vultures are circling your seriously underused star Taryn Manning, who was originally described to me as a series regular but has barely appeared on screen as Steve McGarrett's little sis, MaryAnn. F/X's Sons of Anarchy had wanted Taryn to appear in more episodes this season in her recurring role of Cherry, but her contract with Hawaii Five-O limited her participation. Now comes word that NBC's Law & Order: SVU is taking advantage of Taryn's free time by booking her on an upcoming episode. Taryn will fly to New York in December to portray a woman who years earlier had been coerced into the seedy porn world.
While Five-O producers had planned to feature more of Taryn earlier his season, sources tell me some of her scenes had to be cut when it was decided to take more time unraveling the mystery surrounding the murder of Steve and MaryAnn's mother. Fortunately, Taryn will finally get some well-deserved screen time with Alex O'Loughlin and his crew in an early January episode when her character gets kidnapped. Hawaii Five-0 producer Peter Lenkov insists to me that Taryn is a valued player whom he hopes to use more in 2011.Added: Thursday 25 November 2010 17:06:42 PST

You didn't watch the original becasue it was "old and boring"? So I take it you avoid anything made from the forties to nineties? Everything gets old - we do, and so do TV shows. That isn't a reason to stop watching them.
As for "boring," you find intelligent, creative dialogue, acting, and storytelling to be boring? The original had what the new one doesn't: Great acting, creative and straight-forward storytelling, and action that was used in the proper time and place. If a show that has little to no intelligent or meaningful dialogue, action scenes right and left to get the audience's attention, and the characters having dim-witted conversations to pass the time, than I can understand you liking the new Five-O.Added: Thursday 25 November 2010 14:02:18 PST

From: My heart is in Hawai`iI've just listened to the soundtrack for Morton Stevens' "One Man Jury" (1978). On the overall, I'm disappointed, although several of the songs are delightfully reminiscent of his generation's dance music. The problem lies with music written for the rough, tough detective scenes. They are too much like Five-0 episodic themes. In fact, in numerous places, a bar will sound like it came from Five-0 only to go hastily in a different direction. The "Convenience Store Muzak" theme sounds like it came from an early Five-0 episode, although I can't place it, offhand. Given the inclusion of good songs, I've come to the conclusion that Morton Stevens was so closely associated with Five-0 that he had trouble making the break from it. Understandable for a man whose license tag comprised the first six notes of the Five-0 theme song. Has anyone else heard "One Man Jury" and received these impressions? Just asking. The same is not true of Mr. Stevens' later soundtrack, "Act of Piracy."

HAWAII FIVE-0 “Hana ‘a’a Makehewa” Season 1 Episode 12 – It’s Christmas in Hawaii, but instead of celebrating, Five-0 is negotiating a hostage situation when the man who killed Steve McGarrett’s father resurfaces. Victor Hesse, very much alive, is threatening to detonate an explosive that he’s strapped to Chin Ho Kelly’s chest, (Monday, Dec. 13).
I'm glad the bomb wasn't strapped to Kono's chest, she is skinny enough already.
I think this is the episode where not only Hesse returns, but also Wo Fat and the slimy Japanese businessman played by Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa make an appearance (and no one can play slimy Japanese businessmen better than Tagawa).
As well, Danno is supposedly going to dress up as Santa Claus, and what else can happen? Probably Danno will have to listen to his bitchin' wife (though she is more friendly after the "awww" moments of the last episode), his daughter will be cranky because she didn't get to be the lead in the school Christmas pageant, Max Bergman, the nutball coroner, will lapse into an autistic state, Kelly Hu will offer to be a "little angel" at the Five-O Christmas party, the Governor will actually make an appearance, and ... ?Added: Wednesday 24 November 2010 07:37:35 PST

Kono: Don't cancel your lunch plans...we might be wrapping this one up sooner than you think.
Mike, I have a lot of respect for you, but you sound like a little old man shaking his fist in the air about the "annoying" music. I can understand not enjoying the music based on personal taste, but to condem the producers for not caring about the music or using second rate music is unfair at best. If I'm misinterpreting your posts over the last several weeks, my apologies, but that's how it comes off to me.
I too thought the music on the old show was outstanding. But I also enjoy the music on this version. Yes, it's different and that's the point. I like the producers are finding some cool new groups to incorporate into the show and are matching it well to the story lines. I am not surprised that it is the most DVR'd show as one has to listen to it again to hear what is being said.
Liked the opening to the show-on second viewing wasn't as bad as i originally thought, but still not fabulous. Yes, i watch twice so i cannot ever be accused of being unfair to the show!

From: The world of confusionMention of House is interesting, because I was thinking of that show while watching last night's episode -- you know how on House the writers dig through medical books to find the most obscure disease possible, which House then figures out some patient has and by the end of the episode everything is peachy? Same with last night's Five-0, this business about triathlon types storing their own blood so they can inject themselves later with this blood (shades of O'Loughlin's Moonlight show, of course) and increase their energy levels or whatever the f**k (I think that's what they were talking about -- the dialog is a mile a minute and incomprehensible at times thanks to the sound mix). Maybe the producers are taking advantage of the fact that the new Five-O is the most DVRd show ever, so people who are watching it are more likely to stop and rewind to figure out what the hell was said or done?

Conversations centered around the story without going off on odd tangents. Although it might be considered rough to trip up someone riding a bicycle, it's no rougher than shooting him, especially not after a multi-million-dollar jewelry heist. Technology was within reason, nothing too far out. Grace Park was allowed to be a true member of the team and not just eye candy. She, AOL, Scott Caan, and Daniel Dae Kim acted like professional colleagues. All in all, it was acceptable as a new-generation Five-0.

This article appeared in the April 14, 1973 issue of the AUSTRALIAN TV WEEK. Sounds like Jack Lord set a precedent….or did he?
JACK BEATS THE SYSTEM
HAWAII FIVE-0 star Jack Lord is a man who insists on relaxation. Even on a whirlwind promotional tour of Australia the well-muscled giant insisted on time off to enjoy the scenery. Which is why he took a boat trip around the Sydney Harbor, an attraction which never fails to get visitors from the States.
Jack, back home in Hawaii, completely revolutionized television series-making all on his own, because of his insistence on peace and relaxation and shorter working hours.
“Things were just getting out of hand,” he told TV WEEK. “I was working all hours of the day and night and the weekends, too, so I decided that enough was enough. Now I don’t lift a finger at the weekend, except maybe to paint, and I will not work the long hours that I used to.”
When Jack first put his foot down the television producers howled and said it couldn’t be done.
“You know what?” drawled Jack. “They soon found out it could be done. It had to be. I didn’t intend working myself into the ground. Suddenly schedules were tightened up, and time wasting was cut to a minimum. The same guys that were crying suddenly started to grin when they were working just five days a week, without masses of expensive overtime – and getting a good product on the screen. There is so much time-wasting goes on with a series and it can so easily be cut down. Now I reckon we have the happiest working crew in television. We are relaxed and know that we can enjoy our leisure time without work cutting into it. And for me, that’s how any job of work should be – even in television.”Added: Monday 22 November 2010 18:18:55 PST

From: North Conway, NHActually, KD, if you read the Star Advertiser article you would know that Grace Park does have complaints about her role, and quite reasonable ones too, I might add:
GRACE PARK is feeling lonely in the crowd of hunks on "Five-0." The crime fighters need more gender equity — and she's asked the show's creators to cast another woman as a regular.
"There's a different dynamic with two women versus a girl and a guy," she said. "I wouldn't have to be the only girl ... the girl that always has to be hot. I don't want to always be the one in a bikini. Let me be the normal one. Let me be Mary Ann; let someone else be Ginger."
[...]
"I would also like her to experience who she is as a person and what makes her her by being in these situations," Park said. "Right now I don't see too much of that."Added: Monday 22 November 2010 13:53:35 PST

What AOL said wasn't untrue-acting is a grueling business and it takes a piece of your soul. But, I am sure that many other out-of-work actors would be glad to take his role. It doesn't seem Caan's heart is in it and so he would probably jump at the chance of a movie or another show.Added: Monday 22 November 2010 10:14:49 PST

One might even guess that Jack ENJOYED promoting his good looks flamboyantly!
And AO'L's McGarrett appears to be much less concerned about his HAIR than Jack's McG was. (Scott Caan, on the other hand, is carrying on the Pompadour tradition....)

I am sorry, but any actor that signs for a CBS procedural knows what he is getting into , the latest entry in the network's long line of police procedurals , the case-of-the week that has made CBS the No. 1 network,. CBS is not taking a creative risk with this remake. They are just doing what works for them.
Seems to me they are pointing fingers to each other because the
show is not the mega hit they all were expecting and they sound very frustrated. Why Hawaii Five-O is not the new CBS mega hit ?. Maybe because too many cop shows or just because it is a remake , and remakes usually don't work.
I would love to read what writers think. They are probably just taking the show where CBS is asking them to.
I was VERY disappointed. I was a big fan of the original and this one fell short
Lazy writing, way too much gun-play for Hawaii, and gratuitous violence .

I LOVE that he calls bull**** on David Caruso!!That's gonna ruffle a few feathers.... but I agree with him on that score too.
Scott Caan, well, he's a good whiner - seems that he's playing himself in the show!
The PR thing must have caught them both at a low ebb of energy. But they're certainly not the first to say that starring in a series is exhausting. I've heard that, acting-wise, it's like running a marathon every day, for months on end.Added: Sunday 21 November 2010 10:47:43 PST

From: VancouverHere are some stupid things that have happened in the Five-O shows so far. How would you have fixed these if you were the Script Co-ordinator? Some of these dilemmas are very difficult to get out of in an intelligent way. I have offered a couple of suggestions.
===
Evil Serbians kidnap a computer genius to get him to drop the radar around Oahu, so bad guys can fly in "under the radar" (or more precisely, "without the radar") and buy top secret stuff from them.
Danno and McGarrett infiltrate an "undercover" gambling operation run by local gangsters with the help of Chin Ho's cousin Sid. But visiting Mafia guys manage to figure out the ruse within mere minutes.
A convict escapes from prison and sets up a guard to look like himself and get ventilated by the SWAT team. There is no motivation for the guard to do this. [The convict should have threatened the guard with his family's life (the guard mentions his family after he is captured), but how the convict would know where the family lived is another matter. Maybe he could have forced the guard to tell him their address. A very simple solution, which would have taken a few seconds of time.] In the same episode, the convict manages to get his former partner to have millions of dollars transferred to a Honolulu bank within minutes. Danno and McGarrett talk to the convict's former prison cel neighbor in front of a yardful of other hardened bad guys and get him to provide vital information.
Danno gets the skinny on a cop in HPD who is up to no good by convicing another hardened felon that they put away in the pilot episode to co-operate by offering him a visit with his wife and child.
An evil dictator/army General modeled on Kim Jong-il and Ferdinand Marcos decides to ask for political asylum in the States because he has had a change of heart over all the people he has oppressed, tortured and killed. [The General should have been the son of the guy who was responsible for all these bad things, and wanted political asylum to atone for his father's sins.]Added: Sunday 21 November 2010 10:40:14 PST

CAAN:
'There's no time off, so you see people more grinding and grumpy than having a great time,' says Caan, son of veteran actor James, who plays hot-headed cop Danny 'Danno' Williams.
'Nobody's doing an hour show and going like 'This is the greatest thing in the world'. It's not. Your life is gone when you're doing a show like this, so the goal is to get through it.'
The pressure of delivering hour-long weekly episodes, working 16 hours a day, six days a week, is beginning to show in the circles under the 34-year-old's blue eyes.
He adds: 'The no-time-off drives me crazy. That's my fight if it goes another year, because I need to do the other things I like to do. It's sort of unhealthy doing this show.'
For a moment, he sounds like his Hawaii Five-0 cynical tough guy persona, who refers to the island at one point as a 'pineapple-infested hellhole'. Both real and reel men also feel like a fish out of water on the laid-back island and miss the chaos of the city.
But Caan quickly qualifies, saying: 'Don't get me wrong, I love the show, but I get asked questions and I don't know what I'm supposed to do - I'm too honest to bull****.
'I'm an artist and I'm an unhappy artist most of the time, it's just how I am.'

'I think fewer and fewer people want to see 'CSI: Hawaii'. They (the producers) should see that this show doesn't need to be so procedural,' adds Caan with a tinge of frustration.
In an attempt at damage control, he reiterates that he does not mean to diss the show, and confesses that he struggles with the limitless boundaries of his honesty.
And then he makes another all-too-frank announcement.
'Oh and by the way, I don't have the cinema career that I want anyway. I don't get offers to be in movies starring opposite the people I want. This show to me was the best offer I've gotten in a really long time.
'So I'm lucky to have this job. I'm humbled, but I'm not gonna be happy.'
O'LOUGHLIN:
Equally unhappy and not afraid to show it is Australian actor O'Loughlin, who plays straight-edged task force leader Steve McGarret.
Like Caan, he is emphatic that Hawaii Five-0 is a tough gig.
'You move away from your family and friends to a small island where everyone knows your business and the time you're not at work, you're at home studying for the next day.
'Even when the red carpet stuff comes around, you're so tired you don't even want to go,' he says.
The more important bone of contention for him is the development of his character. He would like McGarrett to possess more depth, while, he hints, the producers prefer to adhere to the tried- and-tested money-making method of standard procedurals.Added: Sunday 21 November 2010 06:44:15 PST

From: Charlotte, NCI've started watching the re-born 5-0 series and have noticed an increasing emphasis, with each new episode, on a musical soundtrack under every scene. I understand why music is used but not to the extent, or the added volume, for every single scene throughout an episode. In fact it's so loud that many pieces of dialogue are at best difficult, if not impossible, to follow. Eventually maybe the producers will get enough complaints and go back to making the scenes dramatic without the need for music.

From: VancouverBarbara, this is indeed a very interesting article, again from the press junket with Asian TV journalists which took place in Hawaii recently. Quite a change from the usual puffery which you expect to read the actors being quoted as saying during these events.
The full article is reproduced on an Alex O'Loughlin fan site here:

I have not been able to track this page down on the site of the newspaper itself, even though it appeared only yesterday (the paper is from Singapore).
I imagine the CBS promo people (who I'm sure regret letting this journalist get so "up front and personal" with Caan and O'Loughlin) will be fretting big time over the comments from the two stars about the way their characters are being developed and also the gruelling work schedule. I can already hear the ka-ching when it comes to negotiating salaries for a second season if that happens.
But on the other hand, I'm sure the CBS flacks are well aware of what Oscar Wilde said: "There is only one thing in life worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about."![]()
